AI in Focus at Cannes Lion 2024

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a central topic at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in the French Riviera, with numerous discussions and events dedicated to exploring its impact on marketing and communications. The weeklong event kicked off yesterday with announcements from Meta about how it is integrating AI into its advertising and messaging. The company reported that 30% of Facebook content and 50% of Instagram content is AI-recommended. AI advancements have allowed Meta to improve its algorithms and offer tools for brands to improve their advertising.

One highlight of the event is a panel discussion with OpenAI Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati and Accenture Song Chief Executive Officer David Droga. Fast Company spoke with both of them beforehand and, if that Q&A is any indication, the general tone is that AI is a creativity collaborator, not a challenger.

For communications professionals, Cannes Lions validates the approach of integrating with AI early and often. Embracing the technology as an enhancement tool allows for streamlining routine tasks, personalizing content, and providing more value. Staying updated on AI trends through industry events like Cannes Lions ensures you’re ahead of the curve, and experimenting with these tools can offer a glimpse into what’s possible on a broader scale.

Tips and Tricks

🤔 Consider your options

Have you ever … wished you could see other versions of a ChatGPT output? Maybe what it gave you doesn’t hit the tone you’re looking for or doesn’t include a detail you want in your content. Instead of typing out a prompt asking for more options, you can create your own shortcut.

Try it out: You can save this shortcut by either asking ChatGPT to remember (which will add to its memory bank) or manually add to custom instructions some version of this: When I type “p3o,” I’d like you to provide three options for your output.

Because p3o doesn’t exist in any word (unless you’re talking about the Portfolio, Programme, and Project Offices Practitioner Certification or a Private Public Partnership Office) it’s unique enough to have only one meaning for the AI model.

Why we like it: This is particularly useful if you use ChatGPT in small chunks, like developing an article by section or a press release by paragraph. You can call on p3o whenever you want it — it’s not like a feature that you forget to turn off and then have to dig into settings to change.

Quote of the Week

“The question of humans amplifying some sort of innate capability is a really old one. We’ve always pushed the bounds of our knowledge, and that’s pushed the entire civilization forward. And now we are starting to get this glimmer into what it means to extend thinking and creativity . . . we’re learning how that will work.”

— Mira Murati, Chief Technology Officer at OpenAI, in a conversation with Fast Company
