Cybersecurity media coverage — especially around a show like RSAC — is never just about the latest technology or research. It’s about the trends media are tracking and how that tech and research supports, advances, or challenges those trends.

That’s why if you want to connect with and help reporters, you need to study the topics reporters are already focused on ahead of the show.

Journalists and analysts are telegraphing what they anticipate will be the big stories:

  • Agentic AI
  • Data security, especially for generative AI
  • Application security
  • Identity security
  • Startups with new solutions

But we did a little extra homework for you, using NewsWhip Spike to analyze the top cybersecurity news articles by engagement from March 1 to April 10, 2025. The results show which stories have gotten the most attention leading up to RSAC and what could be topics of discussion at the show.

What Media Are Talking About Ahead of RSAC 2025

Here are the stories that generated the most engagement:

1. DDoS attacks on X

Stories about the DDoS attacks against X generated more than 300,000 interactions and caused the highest spike in engagement over this time period

DDoS attacks on X

CBS affiliates WGME and CBS 6 Albany captured the highest engagement with this story, which transcended tech to become mainstream news.

Attention around this story quickly faded, but there has been a long tail of takes on the state of DDoS attacks and the impact of hacktivism (after Dark Storm Team took responsibility).

2. U.S CYBER OPERATIONS AGAINST RUSSIA

Reports of the Trump administration halting offensive cyber operations against Russia generated more than 186,000 interactions. This story attracted significant engagement across tech publications, mainstream news outlets, and political media.

While this is another story that slipped out of top-tier headlines, it shows the impact a nation-state story can have. A good geopolitical angle could elevate the story you’re trying to tell.

3. SIGNAL SECURITY QUESTIONS

Stories covering security concerns about Signal generated more than 51,000 interactions, which represents the reactions and commentary on the story through the lens of cybersecurity. The article that started it all — “The Trump Administration Accidentally Texted Me Its War Plans” in The Atlantic — had more than 654,000 interactions.

Expect to hear plenty of conversations around secure communication and user complacency at RSAC.

4. GOOGLE’S WIZ ACQUISITION

Google’s $32 billion acquisition of Wiz generated more than 16,000 interactions, with coverage focusing primarily on the business implications rather than technical security aspects.

The story’s performance across multiple business publications isn’t surprising based on the size of the deal and the players involved — articles emphasizing the “biggest deal in Google’s history” angle performed better than those focusing on cloud security specifics.

As always, coverage is more likely for a deal with a well-known company, and/or one where the dollar figure is both named and significant. The bigger the players and the bigger the amount, the more likely it grabs top-tier attention.

5. WHATEVER HAPPENS BETWEEN NOW AND RSAC

As you know, cybersecurity stories drop suddenly, and it’s possible we’ll see an event in the next couple weeks that could become the talk of the show.

So keep an eye on the media and think about how your story, your tech, and your research can fit into trends media are watching.
